Monthly talk

DR Judith Thornton will be the guest speaker at Dyfi U3A’s (University of the Third Age) next monthly meeting at the bowling club on Friday, 20 September, at 2pm.

Dr Thornton’s talk is entitled ‘Plastics and the Environment’.

Dyfi U3A meets at the bowling club on the third Friday of each month from 2pm.

CATkins

THE CATkins - Parent & Toddler Group will be taking place for 15 weeks at CAT Machynlleth from Tuesday, 10 September at 10am each week.

CATkins is a weekly outdoor club for under fives set in the wild corners of CAT’s visitor centre. As a group they celebrate the great outdoors through nature craft, wild play, making, creating, building and adventure.

THERE will be a Repair and Share Café at Canolfan Owain Glynd?r Centre on Saturday, 21 September, starting at 10am.

Cancer Research

IN their recent report, Alwena Price (treasurer) and Meinir Davies (secretary) were delighted to advise members that, during the week pf 4 to 10 August, thanks to the kindness of the public and commitment of the collectors, the Machynlleth and District Committee of North West Cancer Research (NWCR) raised £764.40 through its annual street and house-to-house collection.

The collectors were: Eluned Besent, Meinir Davies, Eryl Evans, Margaret Evans, Glenys Evans, Jane Evans, Anwen Hughes, Bronwen Jones, Geraint Jones, Alwena Price, Eirlys Pugh, Michael Williams and Margaret Wilson.

Chairman Geraint Jones said: “Many thanks to the public for their superb support and warm congratulations to all our collectors for demonstrating their great commitment to the cause. We are blessed to have such dedicated officers and members to ensure that the facilities at Bangor, Liverpool and Lancaster Universities continue to receive funds for vital research. This is made possible through the wonderful support we receive from you all. Diolch yn fawr iawn.” Geraint went on to send a warm invitation to all to a coffee morning, which will include various stalls and raffle, at the rugby club on Saturday, 5 October, from 10am until noon. Admission is £2.

“I very much look forward to seeing you all on the day to help raise even more funds for research by the three universities’ dedicated teams,” he added.

Bowls finals

PREVIOUS winners and nonwinners alike shared the honours during the bowling club’s competitions’ finals, which culminated over the recent August bank holiday weekend.

Jonathan Taylor lifted the men’s singles title with a 21-16 victory over Mark Rowlands while, in the ladies’ final, Yvonne Jones was crowned champion thanks to a 2112 verdict over Nanw Evans.

Thirty-one players were represented in the finals, bringing warm words of congratulations from competitions’ organiser Don Lewis. He thanked all who’d entered the competitions and Thomas Jenkins for his greenkeeping skills.

Henry Davies fours: Mial Humphreys, Bill Stone, Gareth Wyn Jones, David Thomas 19, Yvonne Jones, Eileen Jones, Mike (“Spike”) Williams and Andrew Fleming 18.

The trophies were presented by club president Michael Williams and secretary Andrew Fleming, and following the presentations they congratulated all the competitors, greenkeeper Thomas Jenkins, Betty Fleming for providing the lovely buffet, and all the bar staff.

Planning

UNDER the council’s scheme of delegation, on 26 July, Powys planning officers approved an application for the demolition of agricultural building and erection of a replacement building, to include the erection of an observatory, Plas Cwmllecoediog, Aberangell.

Civic society

THE next bi-monthly meeting of the Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s executive committee will be held at the Tabernacle, Heol Penrallt, on Thursday, 19 September, at 7pm.

All members of the society are entitled to attend.

Macmillan coffee

CAFFI Y Plas Machynlleth will host a McMillan Cancer Support coffee morning on Friday, 27 September, from 10am until noon.

Machynlleth Town Council’s Plas manager Julie Humphreys said: “We are delighted to organise this event to raise funds for such a vital and valued service. We send a warm invitation to all to come along on the day or lend their support in whatever way they wish.”

Admission is free. Donations welcome. Raffle available. Every penny we raise means Macmillan can help more people with cancer live life as fully as they can.
