Civic Society

VICE-CHAIR David Holt welcomed three new attendees to a meeting of the Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s bi-monthly executive committee at the Tabernacle on Thursday, 16 January.

Following brief introductions from the new attendees Ann MacGarry, Tony Jones and Richard Williams, secretary/treasurer Rab Jones gave a report on the society’s balances and set out the agenda for the evening.

The meeting expressed its great pleasure at the news that the £45m new Dyfi Bridge, new road over the flood plain and associated works had been approved by Welsh Government minister Ken Skates.

Praise was also expressed to the town council for extensive improvements to the internal workings of Machynlleth town clock.

However, there was no further news of a start date for two other major schemes, namely, improvements to the Machynlleth Community Hospital and the new Ysgol Bro Hyddgen.

The vice-chair confirmed that the new Transport for Wales rail timetable was now in place. The meeting said it would welcome enough rolling stock to complement the timetabling improvements.

It was confirmed that a new cash machine had been installed near the town clock, but awaited implementation.

Michael Williams confirmed that work to improve the Roman Steps’ surface and drainage had been completed to a very high standard. The installation of handrails was awaited along the stone steps’ section.

The secretary said that he would report on VE75 Commemoration events, over the weekend of May 8-10, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

It was confirmed that the next meeting would take place on Thursday, 17 March, at 7pm.

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi

SPEAKING at a recent meeting of Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens, lead volunteers’ co-ordinator Angela Paxton spoke about a busy past few months; with the group’s Community Fund ‘Tyfu gyda’i gilydd/Growing together’ project.

This has brought many new people to the gardens, who they hope will continue to stay in touch.

They planted trees and shrubs for the 10th birthday community orchard and started work on the forest shrubbery (see photo).

This has been extremely rewarding and will provide free fruit and nuts for local people and help in a small but positive way to sequester carbon and provide food and shelter for wildlife.
