Friends’ Carols

THIS year’s annual Friends of the Tabernacle Christmas carols will be held at the Tabernacle, Heol Pen’rallt, on Sunday, 18 December. Starting at 3.30pm, this ever-popular Christmas concert will feature Chris Dendy and pupils.There will also be tea, mulled wine, mince pies and a prize raffle.Admission is free and a warm welcome is extended to all.

Dyfi Probus

PROBUS secretary, Chris Fuller represented the club at the Remembrance Day Service on 13 November and laid the Probus wreath at the War Memorial.

Probus is sad to report the passing of long time Probus member John Sadler at the age of 77. John died in Machynlleth Hospital and the funeral was on Thursday, 24 November, at Pennal Church. A former mechanical engineer, John was a great supporter of the club. Condolences go to his wife Maureen and the family.Guest speaker, Judith Alfry, spoke on the work of CADW where she is head of Registration and Conservation. She began by listing a few sites in the Machynlleth area such as Tomen Las at Talgarth, Pennal and a stone circle in Happy Valley.She explained that all or only specific parts of building can be listed. She also pointed out the Royal House (grade 2 star) was the sole example of its type in Wales. The Historic Environment Act (Wales) was passed last year and is one of the best in Britain to help planning policies through its guidance. A vote of thanks was then given for a very enjoyable talk.Future Speakers: 24 January, Nick Fenwick on Working with the FMU of Wales, with a welcome return visit by Barbara Walker on 28 February.

Pool

FOLLOWING week four’s round of matches in the Machynlleth and District Pool League, heading the league’s top individual standings was Rowland Jones of Dwynant with ten wins from 11 frames and in second place, with nine wins and a 100 per cent record, was Kenyon Hall (Llew Coch A). The two top players were closely followed by Geraint Pugh (White Lion A) 9/11, Aeron (Rugby Club A) 9/12, Gareth Evans (Tredegar Arms) 8/9 and Geraint Evans (Skin-ners Arms) 7/10.

Darts

AFTER week six in the Dyfi Valley Darts League, Dwynant has opened a 15-point advantage over their nearest rivals.Table (25 November): Dwynant (55 points), Penrhos A (40), Foresters A (39), Red Lion (30), Bowling Club (19), Slaters (17), Foresters B (14), Penrhos B (5).

Council meeting

THE next ordinary monthly meeting of Machynlleth Town Council will be held at Plas Machynlleth on Monday, 19 December, at 6.30pm. Formal notice of the meeting, including the evening’s agenda, will be placed on the council’s notice board in the Plas foyer. The public and press are welcome to attend.

Soup ‘n’ Songs

A SOUP ‘n’ Songs festive fund-raiser will be held in aid of Corris after School Club on Saturday, 17 December, at 5pm.The event will be held in Corris Institute and will feature local singers and musicians. Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens

THE group met at Plas Machynlleth for its annual general meeting on Thursday, 24 November, with Phil Wheeler in the chair. He gave a warm welcome to all present and said how pleased he was to see such a good attendance and invited the garden co-ordinator, Kate Doubleday, to give a presentation on the group’s activities over the past twelve months.Kate gave an excellent review of all the good work undertaken by the wonderful volunteers and others at the Cae Glas-based gardens. Kate’s well-received presentation was greeted with much appreciation.The detailed annual accounts were presented by treasurer Jane Salisbury and the meeting expressed its sincere thanks.The committee for 2016/17 was re-elected en bloc, namely, chairman, Phil Wheeler; secretary, Eleanor Larmour; treasurer, Jane Salisbury; garden co-ordinator, Kate Double-day; Michael Williams, Noma Mc-Carten, Ellie Ryce, Fiona Underhill and Jane Rigby.

Community Church

THIS year’s Community Carol Service on Thursday, 15 December, at 6pm, will be an all age celebration with a selection of favourite carols, readings, a short nativity video and other musical items. Hot drinks and mince pies will be served in the church hall afterwards and a warm welcome is extended to all. There will also be Family Carols at the church on 18 December and a short, informal service on Christmas Day.
