Bowls

HELD at Aberystwyth’s Queens Road Bowling Club recently, almost three quarters of the Montgomeryshire County Bowling Association’s 16-strong team for the annual three counties’ challenge shield came from the county champions, Machynlleth.

The ten tenacious Mach bowlers, who played such a major role in Montgomeryshire (+17 shots) lifting the coveted trophy over Mid Wales CBA (+11 shots) and Ceredigion CBA (-6 shots), were: Welsh international Andrew Fleming, Nigel Fleming, Adam Hensman, Eryl Jones, Gareth Wyn Jones, Don Lewis, Deacon Price, Brendan Rogers, Mark Rowlands and Brendan Rogers.

Machynlleth’s magnificent bowlers became Montgomeryshire County Champions for an unprecedented 31st time since 1959 as, recovering from the first half of the season when they looked more like relegation prospects than championship contenders, they thwarted a determined performance from mid-table visitors Berriew by 80 shots to 69, pushing Welshpool into second place on Thursday, 10 August.

Berriew (1 point) made the Llyn-lloedd green bowlers fight all the way but, despite close scores on all four rinks, it was Machynlleth (6 points) who emerged victorious to extend their championship-winning record.

Maglona’s (0.5 points) second division clash at near-neighbours Carno confirmed the home club as the division’s winners. Victory on three rinks and a draw on the fourth gave Carno 6.5 points and, with Montgomery’s defeat to Llansantffraid, promotion to the first division.

Machynlleth ladies made sure of runners-up spot in the Montgomeryshire CBA Ladies League thanks to taking the maximum nine points from their home match with Carno Ladies, behind unassailable champions Berriew Ladies.

Edible Mach Maethlon

ON Thursday, 10 August, a successful evening was held at the Machynlleth Bowling Club as, during a free session open to all abilities, the Green Goat Café made some authentic and delicious Middle Eastern dishes.

The new shop at the Canolfan Owain Glyndwr Centre with organic and local fruit and veg and Fairtrade products is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am until 3pm and on Friday until 6pm.

Group members recently spent an evening tidying up their show allotment, crop circles, Victorian fruit garden and the town library raised boxes. The group is offering a warm welcome to those who would like to join them on Monday, 11 September.

Also, a reminder that we’re moving into the runner bean season. The ones in the show allotment on the Plas grounds are really taking off. They need to be picked regularly to ensure a steady supply, so people are urged to get over there and help themselves!

The Edible Mach Maethlon Committee meets once a month to input into the direction of the project, offer support to the project workers and discuss important organisational issues.

The committee members are Mair, Callum, Katie and Grainne (and guest appearances from Matt), a mixture of horticulturists, veg shop owners, co-ordinators and veg growers.

They would love to have some new faces and fresh energy. If you think you would like to get involved, get in touch via [email protected] to hear more about how it works.
