BRO Ddyfi Indoor Bowls Club will be holding its annual general meeting 2017/18 in the bowling club on the afternoon of Sunday, 22 April at 4pm.

The meeting will be followed by the presentation of annual awards to all the winners and runners-up in the local league and competitions, which were played at the Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre.

With spring making a valiant attempt to arrive, the first Edible Mach session of the season will take place at the local fire station beds on 28 March, starting at 2pm.

All are welcome to join the group to get to work on these much-valued beds.

Civic Society

CHAIR Margaret Vince welcomed members to this term’s final bi-monthly meeting of the Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s executive committee, prior to the society’s annual general meeting on 24 May at the Tabernacle on Thursday, 15 March.

The chair and members extended “best wishes” to longstanding member and vice-president Richard Lambert.

Secretary/treasurer Rab Jones set out the evening’s agenda and presented the bi-monthly accounts, which members approved with grateful thanks.

He explained that a bank mandate change will be required to operate the accounts. It was agreed that Carol Handcock and Michael Williams will be added to the mandate with Rab Joes, two from three to sign.

Members considered several pressing items of business, including the impending closure of the Machynlleth branch of Barclays Bank, awaiting a start date for the new Dyfi Bridge project, future provision of cemetery space in the town and, despite a number of objections, Powys’ planning committee had approved an application for four dwellings on the Mynydd Griffith estate.

Carol Handcock reported that work is scheduled to provide a new shelter and to refurbish the existing wooden shelter on Machynlleth Railway Station’s platform one.

Community Church

THE Machynlleth Community Church, Heol Pen’rallt, is holding an Easter Sunday Family Service on 1 April at 10.30am.

All are welcome to attend.

Hot cross buns will be served afterwards.

Ysgol Bro Hyddgen

PUPILS from Ysgol Bro Hyddgen went to Iceland on a Geography fieldwork trip.

Describing the visit, Year 9 pupil Jessica Chick said: “I enjoyed seeing all of the views within Thingvellir National Park and listening to our guide explaining how the tectonic plates meet in this area. We experienced the worst snowstorm Iceland has seen in 15 years - a very geographical experience! The temperature in Iceland was -5C to -20C degrees and there was very thick snow while we were there.

“The best part was going to the Blue Lagoon because the water was really warm. I would recommend seeing the geysers and the spectacular waterfalls because they’re extraordinary sights to see.”
