Firstly, Eliz Swain, who organises the annual Oscars Film Night at the Dragon Theatre was given a cup for using this event to raise money for the local community and to acknowledge the work of individuals in that community.
The Oscars night involved showing Hidden Figures, a film based on the true story of three black women in 1950s America who took on specialist roles at NASA, which had been considered male preserves, and whose determination and expertise had a major bearing on the success of America’s space program.
It was a moving story showing how individuals can make a difference through determination and persistent effort. This film seemed the perfect backdrop to award Rotary’s community Oscars to four people in the Barmouth area who continue to work tirelessly to improve the lives of residents.
The second award was given to the community team in the Rotary Club who have instigated a program of making comfort (heart) pillows for women who have undergone breast surgery or other treatments resulting in discomfort in the chest area.
The distribution of these pillows started with a launch at Dylanwad Wine to women in the Dolgellau area. Increased production of the pillows has allowed distribution to women further afield, thanks in part to the help of local and Macmillan nurses.
A bilingual leaflet, available in surgeries and local libraries, gives information on how to apply for one of these free pillows.
The continued production of these pillows has been assured thanks to donations from grateful recipients of the pillows.
