Walkers
In mid June the New Quay Walkers enjoyed their annual weekend away at the Aberavon Beach Hotel and completed two walks.
The first was a six-mile circular walk to view the spectacular waterfalls, including Sgwd Gwladys and Sgwd y Bedol, along the Nedd Fechan river north of Pontneddfechan village. The other took in the walking trails and the numerous attractions of Margam Park.
The July walk visited the lovely town of Laugharne at the mouth of Afon Tâf in West Carmarthenshire.
Eight walkers accompanied by one dog enjoyed the beautiful sunshine as they completed a six-mile walk which featured highlights of Dylan Thomas’ life in the town in which he lived between 1949 and 1953.
In Laugharne he wrote some of his most memorable work, including Under Milk Wood and the poem Over St John’s Hill. The route visited his writing shed, the Boathouse and his grave in St Martin’s churchyard. The day was completed with an amble over St John’s Hill where Dylan frequently walked..
The next walk, led by Morlais Davies, will be on Saturday, 11 August in the Llangadog and Llansadwrn areas. Full details from Glyn on 01545 561285.
Cross Inn WI
Wednesday morning dawned bright and warm as Cross Inn WI members and their guests from Llanarth WI boarded the coach in anticipation of the trip to Powys Castle.
It was a leisurely drive through glorious countryside via Aberystwyth and Newtown to the castle which sat high above the valley, it’s pink stone glowing in the sun.
All headed to the cafe for some much needed refreshments before various groups wandered off to sample the delights of the castle.
They marvelled at the richness of the State rooms and commented on the relative paucity of the backstairs accommodation and kitchens!
Upstairs, portraits of the Herbert family followed them with dead eyes as the trooped through the Royal bedchamber and paused in the impressive book lined library where the shelves reached the ceiling.
Outside, they enjoyed the wonderful gardens. Tier upon tier of terraces, edged with beds overflowing with colourful shrubs, all in full bloom due to the amazing summer weather.
Those who were brave or fit enough, descended the many flights of steps to venture through the tunnel of yew trees to emerge into the Formal Garden and the Rose Garden at the bottom of the valley.
Sadly, the time passed all too quickly and all vowed to go back soon and enjoy the history and the beauty of the castle and its gardens at leisure.
More delights were in store with a visit to Charlie’s Store where everyone spent a couple of hours indulging in some retail therapy.
Finally, back to Aberystwyth for a delicious supper at the Lletty Park Hotel.
