Walkers

IN July, the New Quay Walkers took a walk with a strong historical theme in Drefach Felindre.

The village and its surrounding area was a thriving centre of the woollen manufacturing industry between the early 1800s and the end of the First World War, developing from a cottage industry into a number of thriving woollen mills.

Its development was assisted by an ample supply of water from fast-flowing rivers and its proximity to busy sheep-farming activity.

Setting off from near Soar Chapel in Cwmpengraig, the walkers were able to admire the exterior of the building and its remarkable condition.

The group then followed a circular route, mainly along woodland tracks used by the woollen workers in days gone by to get to and from work, visiting along the way Waungilwen and Drefach Felindre.

Several of the old mills were passed, including the Cambrian (now the National Wool Museum), Cilwendeg, Pantybared and Dolwion, the latter owned by the Adams family, two descendants of whom, John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams, became the second and sixth Presidents of the United States of America.

The next walk, on Saturday, 17 August, will be a circular one between Aberystwyth and Morfa Bychan.
