PENPARCAU’S History and Heritage group was kept busy renovating the village’s war memorial in time for last month’s Remembrance Sunday service.
And the group, which is part of Penparcau Community Forum, also made use of their new minibus on a recent trip to visit Caernarfon Castle, where the iconic poppy sculpture The Weeping Window was on display.
The sculpture, created by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, is a cascade of handmade ceramic poppies pouring from a castle turret to the ground below, and was commissioned to mark the centenary of the First World War.
The renovation of the Southgate War Memorial was made possible through funding from Aberystwyth Town Council, and the support of the forum.
The stonework and lettering were cleaned and restored by Dilwyn Morgan, and the railings have been repainted by volunteers working with the forum.
Penparcau History and Heritage Group member Karina Shaw thanked the town council for their support, and said the “essential” works were a fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.“We are delighted to have taken a lead on this project,” said Karina Shaw.
“Many local residents have commented on how much better the War Memorial now looks after the work that has been carried out.
“The work was essential to ensure that we preserve the War Memorial for future generations.
“I would like to thank Aberystwyth Town Council and Cllr Steve Davies for their support with this project.
“It is wonderful that this project has been carried out in tribute to those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us.”
While at Caernarfon Castle, the group also laid commemorative crosses in remembrance of soldiers from Penparcau who served in the war.
