Climate Change
ON a cold evening last Thursday, 8 March, some 60 people turned out for a public meeting in the Ganolfan to consider how Porthmadog is responding to Climate Change now and for future generations.
This meeting was arranged by Porthmadog Quakers.
The speakers were Gareth Wyn Jones from Bangor University and Keith Ivens from Natural Resources Wales.
It had been hoped to have a speaker from Gwynedd Council but they were unable to send anyone.
Gareth Wynn Jones set the background of how climate change is affecting and is like to affect Western Britain and Porthmadog.
The increasing speed of icecap melting and the frequency and severity of storms are irrefutable evidence of climate change greatly aggravated by our continuing emissions of carbon and methane into the atmosphere.
Keith Ivens described the responsibilities and areas of influence of NRW.
He identified the current and proposed protection measures being undertaken to reduce flood risk and what responsibility lies with Gwynedd Council to help with this.
Lively discussion followed.
Many people would have liked more definite answers to some of their queries, but certainty is very difficult to provide.
What is known is that the risk, indeed the likelihood, of flooding is increasing.
