Exhibition
THE spring exhibition at Plas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog offers a variety of work ranging from Welsh landscapes and characters to still life work inspired by Abertawe and Nantgarw porcelain.
Work by the artists Aled Prichard-Jones and Karl Davies have been inspired by their native areas, one by north Wales and the other by south Wales, the unique characteristics and atmosphere of these parts of Wales can be found in the paintings.
‘Snowdonia Scenes’ is the subject of Aled Prichard-Jones’ new work and consists of dramatic oil paintings of mountains, lakes and rivers alongside pastel work of colourful flowers.
Having been brought up in Bangor, Aled has walked and climbed the mountains of Snowdonia since he was a child.
It is no wonder therefore that his work is inspired by the area and he succeeds in capturing a sense of place and Snowdonia’s special atmosphere.
Karl Davies, is originally from Newport and now lives in Pontypridd, his exhibition entitled ‘The Welsh Landscape and Us’ contains oil and ink wash paintings inspired by the characters and landscapes of south Wales.
There is a traditional feeling to his work which includes people carrying out traditional crafts, along with rural and town landscapes.
Work by Andreas R?thi, an artist who is originally from Switzerland but now lives in Raglan, is a result of visits to the Plas over a three year period to study the collection of Swansea and Nantgarw porcelain and to hold sessions with the gallery’s volunteers.
As part of this exhibition, the Plas has secured a loan of a bone china punch bowl commissioned by Sir Love Parry Jones Parry of Madryn in 1836 from the National Museum of Wales.
The bowl is exquisitely decorated with coats of arms connected to the Madryn family.
Entitled ‘A Place on the Table’, the exhibition contains new work including portraits of the volunteers who took part in the sessions.
A selection of work by Andreas R?thi and 20 other invited artists, entitled ‘Still Life Settings’ also forms part of the exhibition.
‘Altar’ is the title of the film by Helen Sear shown in the film space under the stage of the open air theatre, it is the last in a year long artist film programme on the theme of ‘flight’.
