St Thomas’s Church

RENAISSANCE, baroque and modern songs of Christmas were sung to an appreciative audience of 160 in St Thomas’s Church on Sunday evening. The concert involved Côr Aberteifi with con-ductor Henry Ward, and soloists Jo Gascoigne, Jacqui Harries, Aled Wyn-Jones, and Stephen Welch.Actor Richard Mitchley, well known from his appearances in Dr Who and Pobol y Cwm, read the entertaining piece A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas. Two poems by R.S. Tho-mas were read by Galen Burnett.The music included works written from 1509 to 2016. The concert opened with the ebullient “Welcome to all the pleasures” by Henry Purcell. There was the first performance of a beautiful new setting of “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Richard Morris. John Tavener’s enchanting “The Lamb” held the audience spellbound. Songs from the renaissance period alternated with lively dance pieces from the same period played by the Sarabande Recorder Ensemble from St Dogmaels.Rehearsals for the choir’s next concert begin on 16 January, and details can be found on its website: cor-aberteifi.org
