WI

MEMBERS enjoyed a social evening during the month of August.

They were firstly praised the wonderful achievements of their own very talented ladies who came so close to winning the best WI Co-operative competition depicting Summer Gloryat the Royal Welsh Show in July.

Ceredigion is one of the smallest WI federations within Wales and therefore receives less financing, but yet again the federation’s small status proved no barrier and only one-and-a-half points separated them from the might of Glamorgan WI.

The group also said well done to Chris for her excellent interpretation of the same theme in the form of a beautiful display of floral art.

The guest for the evening was Dinah Gibbons, a very suitable invitee for such an evening of interpersonal friendship.

Members were not disappointed as they listened to her presentation on her collection of paperweights, which has become a lifelong interest.

Her array of these solid, mostly glass exhibits had been obtained from countries far and wide as well as places closer to home.

First documented evidence shows paperweights were produced around 1845 in Vienna at the same time as the French were producing them in S. Louis, Clichy, and Baccarat, and also others in Murano, Italy and America.

These were considered works of art and were very desirable, but waned in popularity until a resurgence in the 20th century.

Each paperweight in Dinah’s collection has an interesting story to tell.

This ensured that each member of the group present was engaged in her presentation, while the paperweights themselves have created a lifetime of memories for Dinah.

Taliesin WI ladies are always there to help within their own community.

They will once again be serving homemade cakes at Llangynfelyn Horticultural Show on Saturday, 1 September from 1.30pm at Llanfach Hall, Taliesin.

On 15 September they will be at Cartref Tregerddan care home helping Friends of Cartref Tregerddan Bow Street raise money to help make the residents’ lives that little more special.

They look forward to your support at both these events.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, 4 September, at 7pm at Llanfach Hall.
