Inner Wheel Club

AUGUST was a busy for month for the Inner Wheel Club of Tywyn, along with the Rotary Club, organising and running the Race the Train event, which took place on 18 August.

The members of the Inner Wheel would like to congratulate the Rotary president, Nancy Clark, and all her fellow Rotarians for organising a very successful race.

Nancy, who was the race director this year, worked extremely hard along with members and volunteers.

Race the Train brings a lot of runners and visitors to Tywyn, helping the economy and raising money for charity.

The ladies of the Inner Wheel, led by president Mair Worsey, and the catering leader, Chris Lewis, raised money for various charities.

The next club meeting will take place on Thursday, 13 September, at the King’s Restaurant, Talyllyn Railway.

History Society

ON Wednesday, 29 August, the society ventured into Ceredigion for an inspiring visit to St David’s University, Lampeter, the oldest in the United Kingdom after Oxford and Cambridge, closely modelled on Jesus College Oxford.

It is also the home of Welsh rugby.

The first match to be played in Wales was between the university and a schoolboy team.

The society’s tour of the university was hosted by Selwyn Walters, chair of Lampeter’s historical society, a town councillor and the author of a book on the origins of rugby in Wales.

Also included was a visit to the history society’s museum, housed in the lodge of the university and a guided walk of the town trail, both achieved by Lampeter’s historical society with a major grant from the EU with additional support from sponsors including the town council.

This aspect of the tour held particular significance for the Tywyn society in their present endeavours to establish an historical town trail in Tywyn.

There was a morning coffee stop at Aberaeron and the day was rounded off with a lavish tea party at the Hafod Hotel, Devil’s Bridge.

The society’s next meeting, on Monday, 10 September, at 7.30pm at the Baptist Church, will be a talk by Dr Quentin Deakin on ‘Meirionnydd in the Second World War’.

This will be followed up in November by personal wartime memories by members of the local community.
