THE latest community news from Tywyn

History society

ON Wednesday, 17 July, a group of the society’s members visited Penrhyn Castle for the last of their summer activities.

This destination was chosen as a followup to last year’s talk by Dr Marian Gwynne who linked the estate to the owners’ slave-run sugar plantations in Jamaica. At the castle this dark history is told in an exhibition. Neither is the troubled relationship with the Penrhyn slate workers ignored and there is a film including the story of the longest strike in history by the slate workers (1900-3).

There is also a fine railway museum and horse-drawn steam fire engine to be enjoyed.

The next meeting on Monday, 16 September at 7pm at the Baptist Church will be a members and residents contribution evening and will include a presentation by Anne Batham on early local roads of the area and by Charles Benedetto on the history of the Corris railway.

NSPCC

A TOTAL of £822 was raised by the Tywyn branch of the NSPCC over a two-day period through street collections in the town.

Treasurer Anne Lloyd-Jones would like to thank all those who donated so generously as well as everyone who gave up their time to collect donations.

Chairman Jennie Tinsley was delighted with the amount raised and the committee is now preparing for their next event, which will be a skittles evening at the Neptune club in November.

Last year the Tywyn NSPCC raised over £1,700 and Jennie and Anne are hopeful they can reach this amount again this year.

The committee would also be pleased to welcome any new members or anyone wishing to donate or help out in any way with the work that the NSPCC does in Tywyn, in their mission to help children across north Wales.
