Anniversary

A MUTUAL love of music led to a Tywyn couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last weekend.

George and Marg Hickman retired to the Meirionnydd coast from the Midlands over three decades ago where they have since become an integral part of the area’s cultural scene.

The couple have long established roots in the area however as Marg’s father John Edwards was the organist in St Cadfan’s church in Tywyn many years ago.

George, 91, and Marg, 84, enjoyed their 60 years of marriage surrounded by their three sons, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as relatives from all over the UK. Some of the family’s relations even flew over from Canada.

The wedded pensioners met all those years ago through a mutual friend and instantly bonded over a love of music.

George plays the clarinet and Marg sings and both are very adept on the piano and still enjoy playing together to this day.

In fact nonagenarian George has recently taken up the ukelele and is teaching himself to play.

According to Marg, the secret to a long and lasting relationship is communication and never keeping secrets from one another.

Trish Holt, Marg and George’s soon-to-be daughter-in-law and carer, said: “They’re a wonderful couple, always chattering away together, day in and day out.

“They were absolutely delighted with all their cards and presents but were just so pleased to be surrounded by all their family, it was just fantastic.

“It’s been an exhausting weekend - we had over 20 people staying over - but a fabulous one nonetheless.

“We’re grateful to everyone who made their day so special.”

David is an accomplished organist, having apprenticed with organ builder Hill Norman & Beard in the 1970s.

Since then he has played for ice hockey stadia and circuses in Canada, been organist at heritage venues in the UK, a cocktail pianist on a cruise ship and spent many years in his current role as resident organist at the Blackpool Tower, playing the famous Wurlitzer.

He will be playing a mixture of pieces of show music, English light orchestral music and songs from the 1920s and 30s. The show will begin at 7.30pm.
