AT the first meeting of the season held at Y Ganolfan, Bryncrug, on Wednesday, 12 September, the chairperson, Anne Rowlands, extended a warm welcome to a good turnout of the members and especially to four new members.

Apologies for absence were extended on behalf of Stella Edridge, Dianne Bishton, Gaenor Pugh, Margaret Evans and Jane Smith, and get well wishes went to Liz Williams.

In view of new regulations under the Data Protection Act 2018 and the need to obtain permission for the storage of personal data recorded electronically, consent forms had been prepared and were distributed to the members for completion and a brief explanation was given for the need to comply with this legislation.

The chairperson then introduced the speaker for the evening, Jackie Windsor-Lewis from Aberdyfi, who enlightened members on the history of perfume.

She was ably assisted by her husband Geoff, who displayed photos of plants used and the people initially involved in the perfumery business.

The basis of fine fragrances have been relatively unchanging for years but perfumery has now gone through a period of rapid change, with established makers responding to the changing desires of the modern customer by the use of essences.

Jackie had brought with her many samples of well known and favourite perfumes.

The formal vote of thanks was given by Muriel Lycett. The tea hostesses were Gwenfair Pierce, Gwyneth Thomas and Beryl Goodchild.

Winn Bottrill donated the raffle which was won by Mary Davies.

The competition for the evening was for a fragrant flower from the garden and was won by Gwyneth Thomas. Second was Pat Chadwick and Anne Rowlands was third.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 10 October, when former member Maureen Jones and Julia Taylor will give a talk, with accompanying slides, of their Himalayan adventures.

The competition will be for a photograph from a special holiday.
