THE February meeting of the Waunfawr WI took place on Monday, 5th in the Community Hall, on a bitterly cold February evening, which contributed to a poorer attendance than usual.

President Jean Eklund, received a good number of apologies but still warmly welcomed 12 members.

After the usual business had been dealt with, she introduced the speaker for the evening, Jane Guite of Cletwr Café, who thoroughly entertained members as she ‘rabbited on’!

Jane works as the chef at the Cletwr Community Shop and Café and proved to be a delight as a speaker; very much a Yorkshire lass hailing from Sheffield; she spoke of her love for her home county, its history, traditions, culture and industry and tellingly, given her background as a chef, of its superb food; barm brack, Yorkshire curd tarts, fat rascals, ginger parkin, liquorice and rhubarb.

Many of the major food manufacturers and other companies who are household names hail from Yorkshire including Rowntrees, Bassets, Marks and Spencer, Asda and Morrisons.

There are also famous breweries such as Tetley originating in the county.

Jane’s family however, worked in the manufacturing and steel industries of Sheffield and she brought a variety of spoons made in the city, the use of some being a puzzle even now.

All her baking offerings went down very well with members; Parkin with Wenslydale cheese and sweet, lemony curd tarts.

Having lived in Ceredigion for some years now where she is certainly having an impact, Jane will, however always be a Yorkshire Lass at heart with a white rose in the garden.

The next meeting is on Monday, 5 March, at 7pm in the Community Hall when the speaker will be Iestyn Hughes, who will be talking about the History of Ceredigion Woollen Mills which some years ago played a major role in the county’s economy.
