THE latest community news from Waunfawr

Women’s Institute

THE March meeting of the Waunfawr WI took place on Monday 5th in the Community Hall and continuing the theme of this winter, it was on a far from pleasant evening weather-wise.

However, members gathered to celebrate, as is usual at the March meeting, St David’s Day. This year they welcomed Iestyn Hughes as speaker, who talked about the Woollen Mills of Wales. Iestyn, having recently retired from the National Library, searched for a project to occupy his time and which would use his skills as a photographer.

He decided to explore the Woollen Mills across Wales; he visited all the remaining mills and his resulting book, Melinau Gwlan is a wonderful insight into a variety of businesses incorporating very evocative photography.

Some mills have adapted to changing times but many, although owned by skilled artisans, may not have a long term future.

Thus he recommended that we try to visit some of them in the near future. Iestyn brought copies of other books he has published on Ceredigion and Wales.

Members shared Welsh cakes and Bara Brith, while hearing more of the County events planned in Ceredigion.

The next meeting will be on Monday, 16 April, at 7pm in the Community Hall when the speaker will be Amanda Dean who will be talking about Herbal Medicines.

As always, prospective new members will be very welcome.
