The destination for the Meirionnydd Ramblers’ walk on Tuesday, 25 August is the little-known top of Pen yr Allt-Uchaf, an outlier of the Aran ridge.
At 616-metres, this is not a giant of mountain, but it does provide good walking and impressive views of its higher neighbours and the nearby valleys.
The ascent is via the footpath raking up the hillside above Cwm Hengwm. On reaching flatter ground below Drysgol, we turn to ascend more gently through the peat-lands of Waun Goch, soon arriving at the ridge fence. A short walk alongside the fence brings us to the summit. Our descent follows a path slanting gently down the southern slopes of Cwm Terwyn. It is then just a short, more-or-less level walk along Cwm Cywarch back to the start.
This is a Group grade B, circular, 6-mile, National Grade: Strenuous walk.
Start at 10am. The estimated finish time is 3.30pm.
Start at the car park at end of Cwm Cywarch lane (Grid Ref: SH852188). The start time is when the walk commences. Please arrive earlier to ensure you are ready for the start.

On Sunday, 30 August, the ramblers will walk to Craig y Dinas and Pont Ysgethin.
Craig y Dinas is an Iron Age Hillfort situated on an isolated rock at 350m above sea level in a wide upland valley cradled by the mountains of Moelfre, Diffwys and Llawlech.
It is easy to pass by with barely a glance when following the ancient tracks which criss-cross the area, but is well worth a visit, retaining many of its original features including remains of stone ramparts and Iron Age roundhouses. It also boasts wonderful views of the sea and the mountains.
The walk heads up on the track from Cors y Gedol Hall, soon cutting off onto open country towards the hillfort. There is a slight scramble to get into the fort itself but any who prefer to miss this out can return to the track and continue to Pont Scethin pack-horse bridge where we will reassemble and take a break. We then turn towards to the peaceful lake of Llyn Erddyn, nestling under the impressive Llawlech cliffs, continuing to Pont Fadog and back to the start.
This is a Group grade C, circular, 6.5 mile, National Grade: Moderate walk.
Start at 10am. The estimated finish time is 3pm. Start at Cors y Gedol car park, beyond Cors y Gedol Hall, for which there is a small charge. (Grid Ref: SH602230).
Once again, the start time is when the walk commences. Please arrive earlier to ensure you are ready for the start
