A COUNCILLOR has opposed Penparcau Community Forum’s plans to site two shipping containers — to be used for storage — near the under-construction community centre.

Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate, who resigned from Plaid Cymru last month who has been battling a serious spinal condition, made a return to the chamber last week to speak on behalf of the single objector to the plans.

It was reported in the Cambrian News last week that work had begun on the new £650,000 Penparcau Community Centre after the forum secured £490,000 from the Welsh Government, with another £150,000 coming from the People’s Health Trust.

And the forum has now submitted plans to the council to site two 2.6m-high shipping containers, hidden by a wooden fence, on a parcel of land which sits immediately behind several properties at Tycam.

Planning officers recommended the plans be approved, but Cllr Jones-Southgate said one resident of Tycam, Patricia Fitzpatrick, had come to her with concerns over having the containers at the rear of her home.

“This is an inappropriate use of green space, which is a precious commodity in Penparcau,” Cllr Jones-Southgate told members of the planning committee.

“There will be disruption when the containers are installed, with large vehicles delivering the containers.

“It is felt that the placing of the containers at this location will encourage antisocial behaviour and be an eyesore."
