The brief report ‘Council objects to Iceland signs’ in your last issue beggars belief. Had it appeared a week earlier then it could have been passed off as an amusing April Fools hoax!

How, exactly, do the objectors envisage the signage to read?Should it be the literal translation as Gwlad yr Ia or an equally absurd transliteration such as ‘Eisland’ or ‘Aisland’? In view of the council’s objection to monolingual signs can we now expect signs such as Scriwfics, Necst, Picocs or Marcs a Spenser, and the like, to appear any time soon?

As a Welsh speaker I fully support the use of Welsh (both spoken and written) wherever possible and practical, but the type of nonsense which your report draws attention to only serves to make Welsh speakers a laughing stock and subject to mockery!
