Madam,

In your paper, last week, your debate about the bus interchange in Eldon Square continues as it should, but a comment by John Raghoobar, a Dolgellau councillor, in a related article needs comment from someone who was actually there.

For those readers who missed the offending paragraph it is: ‘Cllr John Raghoobar agreed with Cllr Morgan and said that “as upsetting as the incident with the elderly lady was, accidents will happen” and that businesses in the square “should close their doors” if pollution is a problem.’

I wonder where Cllr Raghoobar hides when he makes such comments.

‘The incident’, is it not more than an incident when a reversing double decker bus knocks any person over, elderly or not?

‘Accidents will happen’, they can be avoided, is that not one of the main points of the debate that has been going for too many years?

‘If pollution is a problem’. Is Cllr Raghoobar unaware of the evidence that has been widely reported in the media?

We wonder if Cllr Raghoobar thinks about what he is saying. We do think that the involvement of Cllr Morgan in the same paragraph is a little too rich to be believed.

As far as closing doors, few if any are draught-free and the purpose of a shop is to encourage people to come in through an open door which in winter is opened by residents and visitors probably escaping from the fumes outside.

Yours etc,

Phil Martin, shop keeper, Eldon Square, Dolgellau.
