A COMMUNITY councillor has lambasted drivers who speed along the Mawddach Estuary and has called for further traffic-calming measures on one of Meirionnydd’s most notorious roads.

Cllr Janet Edwards, who sits on Llanelltyd council, lives on the stretch of A496 between Barmouth and Dolgellau which has historically been the scene of many accidents, some fatal, and has recently witnessed two serious crashes in quick succession.

On Sunday, 3 April, a motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with “potentially life-changing” injuries after he fell off his bike and had to be cut free from roadside vegetation by firefighters.

Just three days later, a black Volkswagen Golf flipped onto its roof (pictured) on the same series of corners near Bontddu.

Fortunately, the driver walked away unharmed.

The road has previously been investigated as dozens of series collisions have taken place on the A496 in the last decade.

Cllr Edwards, who lives near the Penmaenpool toll bridge, believes now is the time for action.

“The road has become incredibly dangerous due to the speed at which some motorists pass through the area,” she told the Cambrian News.
