COUNCILLORS have welcomed the idea of a Euro 2016 ‘fanzone’ in Aberystwyth this summer and will work with the football club to make it happen.

It was reported in the Cambrian News last month there were calls to hold a fanzone — an area which allows hundreds of fans to watch a sports match together on a big screen — in Aberystwyth following the Welsh national football team’s qualification for a major tournament for the first time since 1958.

But after Bangor City FC said they would be interested in hosting a fanzone, hopes that Aberystwyth FC would be able host one for mid Wales were dashed after the club said the tournament would coincide with the development of a new 3G pitch at Park Avenue.

At a meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council, councillors were in agreement that it was an “excellent idea” and discussed possible alternative locations for the fanzone in the town.

“I think it is an excellent idea, but where would we hold it?” asked Cllr Brian Davies.

“A large screen would allow supporters to get together, and there would be food and drink sold.

“The football club would be ideal with the car park nearby.”

Cllr Wendy Morris said: “Why not suggest we have it on the university’s track because at certain times of the year nobody is using it?”
