A GARNDOLBENMAEN couple have accused Gwynedd Council of ignoring their pleas for help in dealing with flooding around their home which destroyed their Christmas.
Gerallt Slater, 70, who lives at home with his 73-year-old wife Shirley, say they have been plagued by floods at their home since autumn 2012 and are angered that their local authority is failing to address the issue.
The couple claim the floods are caused by rainwater which comes down the mountain, past the houses at Mynydd Glas, which ends up overwhelming the drainage system and floods the fields and road down to their home at Ty Croes.
Mrs Hawthorn-Slater said: “The cause of the flooding is a failure to keep drainage ditches clear.
“The situation has been made worse by rainwater pouring across the road and into Ty Croes.
“I have spoken to a local man who was raised in Ty Llwyd and he told me there was a spring or well in Ty Llwyd and that it has been filled in.
“When there is heavy rain the water bursts from the ground in mini fountains about 10cm high, pours across the road, carrying with it soil, sand and building rubble which blocks the drain in the road and adds to the flood entering Ty Croes.”
Mrs Hawthorn-Slater added: “I had a fall in April 2014 when I ended up in hospital with a broken shoulder, concussion and other injuries from which I am still recovering.
“As I am the carer for my husband who has MS this caused tremendous problems for me and I was not able to purse this matter for some time.
“Every time I contacted the council office in Pwllheli I was told there was no information on the computer system.”
Mrs Hawthorn-Slater said she was aware that another 28-day legal notice was issued to landowners at the beginning of December requiring them to clear drainage.
“To my knowledge this has not been done and once again our Christmas was ruined and Ty Croes is still threatened by flood water,” she added.
No-one at Gwynedd Council was available to comment.
