A Lampeter couple who’ve been the local organisers of the BBC’s Children in Need campaign for decades are finally stepping aside in their 35th year of fundraising – and after reaching their £1m target.

Beti and Goronwy Evans started raising money for the charity in the early 1980s but they say that this year will be their last in charge, and they are appealing for volunteers to take over from next year.

“We’ve enjoyed the past 35 years, but we’re both in our mid 70s now, and it’s time for someone else to take the reins,” said Goronwy.

“I’m sure there are people in Lampeter and the surrounding area who could take over the organising work locally for this fantastic cause.”

Since 1983, Beti and Goronwy have facilitated the collection of a over a million pounds from Ceredigion and parts of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

“We started doing it from our house all those years ago. But, because there was such a large enthusiastic team of people involved, manning telephones and collecting money, we decided it would make sense to move to other locations in Lampeter, and over the past few years we’ve been based at the Wesleyan Chapel in the town for Children in Need day.”
