IN a ’Spar’ day with a difference, a Pwllhelli couple have celebrated their wedding anniversary with a table for two in the corner of their local supermarket, where they first met.
Teaching assistant Dyfed Ellis Pritchard, 43, secretly organised the romantic three-course meal for his wife, Bethan, 39, to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary, near the magazine counter in Pwllheli’s Spar store on Tuesday last week.
Somehow, Dyfed managed to convince his wife to put on a blindfold and follow him through town for the anniversary surprise.
The store rolled out the red carpet and a special table and chairs was set up under the magazine counter – a sight that shocked Bethan, 39.
They were treated to a three-course meal, with a Kinder Egg starter, a store-made pizza and finished with cakes by former Apprentice star, Alana Spencer.
All three of their children - Sophie, 16, Cai, 14 and Noah, 13 - acted as waiters whilst the couple were serenaded by musician friend, Fred Sutton.
The couple met whilst both working at the Spar store 18 years ago.
Dyfed explained: “One day, Bethan was a bit down when we were in the shop together. So I bought her a Kinder Egg to cheer her up and plucked up the courage to asked her out.
“Ever since, I have bought her a Kinder Egg on every anniversary.
“Eighteen years later, I thought I would take her back to the place we first met.
“I explained to the owner, Conrad Davies, what I wanted to do and he was very helpful getting a table and chairs set up.”
The couple’s children all helped with the organising whilst their mum was across the road, in the local Wetherspoons, waiting for her husband, completely unaware.
Dyfed said: “It came as a massive shock to her, but a good one.
“It took a lot of organising, but I would like to thank everyone for helping out on the day.
“Thanks to Neuadd Dwyfor for lending us the table, Conrad for letting us take over his store and the kids for waiting on us.
“It was quite a job to keep it quiet, but Bethan, who is originally from Cardiff, doesn’t speak Welsh, so I was able to do a lot of organising without her knowing what was being said.”
