A DOLGELLAU couple who travelled across the word to deliver aid have described the “heartbreaking scenes” that awaited them on arrival.

Keith and Suzanne Williams flew out to a remote village in Nepal last month to deliver warm clothing donated by generous folk from Meirionnydd and further afield, with one coat even coming from as far as Lincoln.

The hardy duo visited Shreekhandapur, a village the Williams family has been working with since their son volunteered in the local primary school seven years ago.

“During our time in Nepal we saw incredible poverty and hardship,” Suzanne, manager of Dolgellau’s post office, explained.

“We saw some heartbreaking scenes, a man dying on the side of the road, young boys, maybe six or seven-years-old, using skateboards to get around as they had no legs, children as young as two or three begging.

“Yet despite the hardships, the Nepalese people were so happy and friendly.”

The rural village faces a fierce winter with many people facing cold, sleepless nights following a natural disaster which killed nearly 10,000 citizens in April 2015.

“The damage caused by last year’s earthquake is still causing problems,” Suzanne continued.

“We were surprised to see the extent of the damage and how little had been repaired in the village.

“We were told of people who still have no homes or shelter, even though the monsoon season recently passed and winter will soon arrive.

“The headmaster’s house is still a shell, although he is hoping to have it in a liveable condition in five months.

“He, his wife, two children and elderly mother are currently sharing one room in a shared house.”
