A man stole £2,500 of tools and other equipment from a storage compound at Aberystwyth Holiday Village in a raid which may have been sparked by boredom.
Jordan Reece Pitts, 21, pleaded guilty to burglary at the holiday park on 16 September when he broke into two caravans and a storage shed and stole a range of items including power tools, batteries, chargers and hand tools, but was caught on CCTV.
Kevin Challinor, prosecuting, said a staff member noticed that a shed door had been left open and a check found that the locks of two caravans used to store items had been damaged and one of the caravans entered.
Checks showed a range of items had been stolen, and Mr Challinor said CCTV footage led to a manager identifying Pitts, of 13 Hickman Road, Princes End, Tipton in Sandwell.
Pitts gave police a prepared statement where he admitted the burglary and said he would return the tools and equipment or pay for any item he couldn’t return.
Mr Challinor said there was no compensation claim by the Holiday Village.
Defence solicitor Lauren Bayley said Pitts said he had made “a massively stupid mistake” and that he regretted the burglary more than anything else in his life.
She said that at the time, Pitts had been involved in an argument with his mother and was left staying in his sister’s caravan at the Holiday Village on his own, but that since then things had been resolved and he was “certainly getting back on track”.
Ms Bayley added: “There was no planning, it was a spur of the moment foolish mistake.”
After completing a pre-sentence report, probation officer Julian Davies said he thought that the offence may have been caused by boredom and recommended a community order including unpaid work.
Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 100 hours of unpaid work.
Pitts will also pay costs of £175.
