A Newcastle Emlyn driver crashed his car into a pub before fleeing the scene, leaving his then girlfriend trapped in the wreckage, a court has heard.

Justin Thomas, 35, of Derwen Gardens, had been at a wedding reception at the Ffostrasol Arms where he drank pints of beer, amaretto and whiskey before driving towards Synod Inn, where he crashed his car into the village’s pub of the same name on 18 August 2017.

In Swansea Crown Court, Thomas was handed a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Helen Randall told the court that Thomas then fled the scene, leaving his injured girlfriend behind.

She had to be cut from the wreckage and spent the next two weeks in hospital.

Video footage provided by the CPS, which you can watch below, shows the extent of the damage.

In an impact statement to the court, his former girlfriend said she had been "left for dead”.

Ian Ibrahim, for Thomas, said the defendant had written a letter of apology to his former partner and to the court.

Judge Keith Thomas sentenced Thomas to two years in prison suspended for two years, banned him from driving for three years and ordered him to complete 300 hours of unpaid work.
