THE father of a Ceredigion union official who was killed in a car crash has slammed the two-year prison sentence handed out by a judge to the driver responsible.

Jack Leon Isaac Weston was jailed for two years after admitting causing the death of Unison area organiser Roger Bevan by dangerous driving on the B4337 Cilcennin to Cross Inn road on 14 July 2015.

Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins said 22-year-old Weston’s driving was “immature” and “impatient” and witness Benjamin Tiltman, who had to brake to avoid a collision with Weston as the defendant tried to overtake two cars approaching a bend, claimed Weston’s manoeuvre was an act of stupidity.

He said he hadn’t seen driving like it in 20 years.

Weston, of Tir Bach, Cilcennin, had overtaken two cars before losing control and hitting Mr Bevan’s VW Golf head-on. Mr Bevan died at the scene from multiple injuries while Weston spent a week in Bronglais Hospital after suffering serious leg fractures.

Ken Bevan, Mr Bevan’s father, questioned the two-year prison sentence.

He said: “No sentence will bring Roger back. But I don’t see how a two-year prison sentence can be seen either as an adequate punishment or a deterrent that will stop others from driving their cars in such a completely selfish, reckless and dangerous manner, like Jack Weston did when he caused the death of my son last year.

“I lost the closest and dearest person to me, but found some comfort in the comradeship and love of Roger’s friends and colleagues, and in our work for the Roger Bevan Memorial Fund.”
