An Aberystwyth man assaulted three police officers after he was asked to stop kicking a flat door.
Liam Stevens, 19, of 50 Tan y Castell, had taken drugs which had a “substantial impact on him” and left him trying to get into the wrong flat his solicitor said.
Stevens admitted a string of charges, including three charges of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a bladed article, two charges of criminal damage, disorderly conduct and charges of possession of cannabis, MDMA and Class C drug benzodiazepam on 25 October.
Prosecutor Rhian Jones said police were called to Tan y Castell after a staff member saw Stevens kicking a door and noticed damage to a door and fire shutters. After being asked to stop, Stevens left the property, but kicked a sign on his way out before returning and started kicking another door.
The staff member asked Stevens to calm down, but he threatened to throw a traffic cone at her and continued to be disruptive.
A police officer had to take Stevens to the ground, but ended up being kicked in the chest, while another officer who tried to intervene also got kicked in the chest.
A third police officer had to duck to avoid getting kicked in the head, but Ms Jones said the kick “skimmed” the officer’s head. Following his arrest, police found the three drugs in a bag along with a three-inch lock knife.
While in a police cell, Stevens put a blanket and anti-rip clothing down the toilet.
Ms Jones said the convictions had breached a conditional discharge imposed in February this year after Stevens was convicted of possession of an offensive weapon. She said that while none of the three police officers suffered an injury, it was an “unpleasant incident”.
Defence solicitor Robert Hanratty said Stevens had taken a large amount of valium which was given to him, but meant he didn’t remember anything about what had happened.
He said Stevens had been so confused he had gone to the wrong flat and tried his key, only for it to snap in the lock. This led to him becoming frustrated and start kicking the door as he was “agitated”.
Mr Hanratty said drugs “are a feature of his life”, but said Stevens couldn’t explain why he had MDMA as he doesn’t use MDMA, but does take cannabis and valium.
With Stevens having a previous conviction for possession of an offensive weapon, which Mr Hanratty said was a baseball bat, he could be jailed, although Mr Hanratty said he was hoping to persuade magistrates to suspend any prison sentence.
Stevens was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for a year. As part of that order, he will have to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activity requirements and 100 hours of unpaid work. He will pay £50 compensation each to the three police officers, and £207 costs.
