An Aberystwyth man was found with child pornography, including some of the most serious category, after police were tipped off by the National Crime Agency.

Callum David Unsworth, 24, of Garthallen, Loveden Road, pleaded guilty to three charges of possession of indecent film clips and still images, with three Category A - the most serious - images, seven Category B images, and 40 Category C images.

Prosecutor Ceri Ellis-Jones said Unsworth was arrested on 14 August after police had searched his home and seized three electronic devices following information from the National Crime Agency.

Ms Ellis-Jones said analysis of the devices found the images.

In an initial interview, Unsworth made no comment, but at a second interview gave a prepared statement admitting possession of the images and saying that he realised he shouldn’t have had them and that they were illegal.

In his statement, Unsworth said he wanted help and had spoken to his GP about mental health issues.

Ms Ellis-Jones said the starting point for possession of images of Category A was 12 months’ custody, but said that magistrates could take into account other issues which would mean their sentencing powers of six months in custody could be suitable.

Lauren Bayley, defending Unsworth, said that he had spoken to his GP about issues and said that he had shown that he wanted help, meaning that rehabilitation was possible in his case.

She said that with the majority of the images Unsworth had being in Category C, magistrates could retain the case for sentencing and not send it to crown court.

However, despite the representations, magistrates said they felt the case should be sentenced in crown court.

Unsworth was released on unconditional bail until a sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court.
