An Aberystwyth student who crashed into a parked car while almost three times the drink-drive limit initially told police that another car had crashed into her and driven off.

Alana Eifiona Davies, 24, had only driven a very short distance to park her car while on a night out, and her solicitor Kevin Williams told magistrates that the case had been a “salutary lesson” for her.

Davies, of 62 Garth Dinas in Penparcau, admitted drink-driving on 23 May.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said police were called by a member of the public who reported a crash.

When officers arrived they found Davies with friends by her car, which was in the middle of the road at New Promenade.

Ms Tench said Davies initially told police she had been hit by another car which drove off, but officers noticed a parked Mercedes had suffered damage and after looking at the damage to Davies’ car suspected she had hit the parked car.

Davies admitted to officers she had hit the other car and she was asked to take a breath test after officers noticed her speech was slurred and her eyes were glazed.

Ms Tench said Davies was found to have 101 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates heard that Davies was “deeply regretful” for the incident after asking for a probation report. The probation officer said Davies had not been planning to drive after going out with friends, but made the decision to take the car when they were walking past the car to get to her friend’s home.

Mr Williams said Davies had only driven a very short distance but accepted she was well over the drink-drive limit.

He added: “It’s been a salutary lesson to this young lady. You won’t see her in court again.”

Davies was banned from driving for 26 months. She was fined £200 and will pay costs of £115.
