A Tanygroes recently disqualified driver who took a car before crashing it and causing extensive damage while the subject of a suspended sentence order has been jailed by magistrates.

Geraint Jones, of 4 Henllys, appeared before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on 10 October.

The 40-year-old pleaded guilty at the hearing to a charge of aggravated vehicle taking and property damage by taking a Vauxhall Crossland without the consent of the owner at Bronwydd on 8 October this year.

After the vehicle was unlawfully taken and before it was recovered, “owing to the driving of the vehicle, an accident occurred,” the court heard.

Jones rolled the car during the incident, the court heard, causing “extensive damage.”

Jones also pleaded guilty at the hearing to a separate charge of driving whilst disqualified on the same day.

He also admitted driving the car without insurance, while another charge of failing to provide a sample for a drug test at Llanelli police station was dismissed at the hearing with no evidence offered.

Magistrates handed Jones a prison sentence of a total of 36 weeks.

Magistrates said the offences are “so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified” because Jones had a “recently imposed driving disqualification”, and the crimes were aggravated by his “record of offending and inconsistent, poor compliance with community requirements including one previous breach.”

The court said that Jones rolled the car causing extensive damage, and did not suspend the jail sentence as Jones “is in breach of a court order and subject to a suspended sentence order.”

Magistrates also disqualified Jones from driving for a further 28 months, with a 22 day extension due to Jones’ immediate imprisonment.

Jones was also ordered to pay costs to the Crown Prosecution Service of £85.
