A Bow Street woman did use a lit cigarette when attacking her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, magistrates have ruled.

Elinor Lowri Hughes, 29, had pleaded guilty to assaulting Emily Harwood on 22 August after the two women had become involved in a row with Hughes saying that Ms Harwood had hurled abuse at her in the toilets of a bar.

Hughes, of Nirmit, faced a special Newton hearing after she insisted she had not used a cigarette to burn Ms Harwood, but magistrates found that they accepted the cigarette had been used.

Magistrates heard that Hughes had told a probation officer that after becoming upset at the confrontation with Ms Harwood she had started drinking more heavily which had led to her assaulting Ms Harwood, but that she had said she was “embarrassed” at her behaviour.

Defence solicitor Katy Hanson said Hughes had admitted assault and had accepted the magistrate’s ruling.

Following a recommendation from the probation service, magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 150 hours of unpaid work.

Hughes will also pay compensation of £100 to Ms Harwood and costs of £485. She was also made subject to a restraining order to stay away from Ms Harwood for six months.
