CREW past and present have paid tribute to a former Pwllheli RNLI stalwart who has died.

Former coxswain, mechanic and secretary for Pwllheli lifeboat, Owen Roberts died last week at the age of 88.

Owen started young with the RNLI and has a history with the charity, spanning more than 50 years.

His first role within the RNLI was as a Shore helper/crew from 1953 to 1957. He then went on from 1957 until 1962 to be a crew member on-board the Lifeboat that served at Pwllheli. From 1962 until 1978 he was a Mechanic at the station before proceeding to be a Second Coxswain Mechanic from 1978 until he retired in 1989.

This was not the end of his association with the charity, he couldn’t keep away. Between the years of 1992 and 2006 he served in many different roles, they include Chairman, Honorary Secretary, Committee member and as DLA.

He inspired many to join the RNLI over the years and none the less than his four sons Glyn, Alwyn, Bryn and Emlyn which have all served on-board Pwllheli Lifeboat with Alwyn being our current Station Mechanic.

Tomos Moore, crew member, said: “Owen played an influential role within the station for over 50 years, and he will no doubt have a lasting legacy saving 75 lives whilst onboard the lifeboat here in Pwllheli. He will no doubt be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

“I’m sure it can be said that Owen lived for the lifeboat and saving lives was in his blood. He was unfailing in his loyalty and support to us all at Pwllheli.

“He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and his wider family – the RNLI.”
