Crowds have gathered on a beach in Gwynedd to witness the delivery of a 128.5 tonne transformer.

The electricity transformer, which has been described as the size of a large motorhome, arrived at Black Rock Sands this morning.

The delivery was postponed following severe weather earlier this month.

A 330m temporary trackway has been laid on the beach ready for the transformer’s arrival by 80-metre barge.

A 10m wide corridor has been cordoned off for the trackway with two walkways for pedestrians to cross. Vehicle access to the beach will be via Beach Road.

The transformer will remain there until Friday when it will travel by road to Trawsfynydd, arriving at around 12.30pm.

The route, with rolling road closures, is as follows:

• Depart Black Rock Sands

• Turn right onto High Street

• Continue onto Britannia Terrace

• Continue onto A487

• Continue onto A470

• Arrive at Trawsfynydd Substation

A text service is available to remind people the main beach access will be closed and when the transformer departs from Black Rock Sands Beach, when the main beach access has re-opened and when the transformer has arrived at Trawsfynydd Substation and the delivery is complete.

A text message will also be sent if there are any delays in the schedule.
