Rugby players from Aberystwyth University women’s team will raise money for the town’s RNLI and the Wales Air Ambulance as a thank you for saving the life of one of their teammates.
Amy Best, social secretary of the rugby team’s 2018/19 committee, was hit by a car in 2016 and believes she survived thanks to the help of two RNLI volunteers and the air ambulance which transferred her to hospital.
And the masters student is thrilled that her teammates will come together this weekend to raise money for both organisations by cycling the distance between John O’Groats and Lands End.
“I still very much believe that what Paul, Nick and Ian did made my chances of survival that much more,” said Amy.
“I know that if I hadn’t received that treatment on the roadside and then been airlifted to the Heath to have a stay in resus and ICU, I would be in a lot worse state than I am now.
“I don’t think I’d be here without the help of all of the people involved in my medical care that night.”
Amy, who is no longer able to play rugby, added: “I want to raise money for the air ambulance because I can’t believe it’s a charity - that something so important and life-saving is existing purely on the kindness of the general public is mind blowing to me.”
Amy’s teammates still support her, with many of them taking part in a cycling challenge tomorrow.
