THE tragic death of a Llanuwchllyn farmer has prompted a union to release a keep safe this winter warning.
On Tuesday, 22 November, Bryn Edwards, 70, was seriously injured when he fell through a roof at his family farm, Tyddyn ‘Ronnen.
Although emergency services rushed to the scene and quickly conveyed him to Royal Stoke Hospital, doctors were unable to save Mr Edwards’ life.
Mr Edwards had been inspecting his roof following high winds and storms last month when the tragedy occurred.
As a result, NFU Cymru is urging farmers to take extra care during the Christmas period and stay safe and well on farm.
The comment that falls from height, such as Mr Edwards, account for 14 per cent of fatalities over the past 10 years.
They also refer to a farmer who died after his vehicle came into contact with an overhead power line with incidents involving transport accounting for 29 per cent of fatalities in the past 10 years and contact with electricity at three per cent.
NFU Cymru president Stephen James said he wanted to stress the importance of keeping vigilant when it comes to preventing life-threatening accidents during the winter months.
“With Christmas upon us, the last thing any of us want to hear about is a farming fatality, a grieving family and a community in shock,” said Mr James.
“Whilst farm deaths dropped in Great Britain to 29 last year, they rose to five in Wales, up from four the previous year.
“Across Great Britain it’s likely to rise to nearer the average of 37 again in 2016/2017.
“This is why we at NFU Cymru are continuing to support the farm safety campaign and to educate farmers to stay safe on the farm."
