AN ASTONISHING campaign has successfully raised enough money to buy a defunct pub in a bid to breathe new life into the community.

The Tafarn yr Heliwr/Sportsman Committee raised a massive £82,000 through selling stakes to purchase the Nefyn High Street pub which had been closed for nearly a decade.

Earlier this year, a public meeting was called and locals decided to set up a committee and sell shares to raise enough money to buy Tafarn yr Heliwr after it was listed on the market 18 months ago with an asking price of £160,000.

Staggeringly, within two months of launching their initiative, they had collected enough funds to have an offer on the pub accepted.

A total of 450 shareholders have a stake in the scheme, whether they donated £50 or £5,000, and will work on a strategy to reopen the venue as a not-for-profit community-owned business with accommodation, a kitchen, and meeting facilities.
