A Porthmadog museum has won the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Porthmadog Maritime Museum, run by a group of volunteers, has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The award was announced in the Birthday Honours List on 2 June.

Museum chairman Dr John Jones Morris and group member Robert Dafydd Cadwalader represented the museum at a garden party at Buckingham Palace last week, along with other recipients of this year’s award.

The museum will receive its award from Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd, Edmund Seymour Bailey, later this summer.

Dr Jones-Morris said: “We are absolutely delighted that our dedicated and committed group of people have been recognised and honoured in this way.

“The community of Porthmadog and the surrounding area have been very supportive and interested in our activities and we have had visitors from all corners of the world.”
