A Lampeter campaign group held a ‘die-in’ at Harford Square to draw attention to what they claim are the dangers of the roll-out of 5G communications technology.
Members of 5G Awareness Lampeter say it uses a different section of the electromagnetic spectrum from previous mobile signals, and will utilise lamp-posts as transmitters.
“It has had no safety testing whatsoever, and is considered by many doctors and technology experts to pose a unique and serious danger to our health,” said a spokesperson.
“Humans - and all mammals, birds, insects and even plants - will be drastically affected by 5G if and when it is used here.”
Places that have already banned 5G, or called for a halt while research is done, include Bristol, Glastonbury and Liverpool. 5G has been switched on by EE and Vodafone in Cardiff, London and four other UK cities so far.
The Lampeter group, who include two retired medical doctors and a biologist are calling on local politicians to resist pressure from Westminster - and the tech industry - to ‘steamroller’ ahead with 5G.
Member Caroline Dent said: “Wireless technology has been proven to make many people ill.
“The vastly increased strength of 5G and its blanket coverage - via transmitters on lamp-posts and also the array of space satellites already launched - may pose unquantified risks on a massive scale.
“In particular, it is likely to rapidly kill insects, which are already under threat from climate change. That will have knock-on effects on soil health and the whole food chain. Surely it is time to halt this now.”
A meeting will be held at the Victoria Hall at 7pm tonight.
