Gardening club

IN AUGUST we learnt a great deal about organic vegetable-growing from Malcolm Berry and look forward to trying out some of his ideas in our gardens.

The gardening club’s next meeting is on Wednesday, 7 September, 7.30pm at The Red Dragon Hall.We will be welcoming Pat Helmsley who will be giving us a potted history of cottage gardens. Pat is group organiser of the West Wales Cottage Garden Society.

Saturday, 10 September is our 29th Annual Horticultural and Craft Show, which is held in the Red Dragon Hall. Exhibitors are welcome from 9am to 10.45am and the show is open to the public from 2pm.

There will be refreshments, a raffle and a painting and drawing exhibition by pupils of Ysgol Penboyr.

The awards will be presented by the presidents of the show Mr and Mrs David Clark from 3.15pm.

Meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month. Free refreshments are served following the speaker’s presentation and club members bring along items for the raffle, such as spare plants and garden produce. We also organise a seed swap.

There is a warm welcome for everyone and guests are invited for free on their first visit.

In addition, the club holds two plant sales every year. Donations of plants, gardening items and garden produce are much appreciated for these events and proceeds go towards community projects in Drefach Felindre.

The club also arranges visits to award-winning and historic gardens, members’ gardens and specialist nurseries throughout the year.
