The Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
The Queen’s husband, who carried the title of the Duke of Edinburgh, died this morning, the Royal Family confirmed in a statement.
He officially retired from public life in 2017 after completing 22,219 royal engagements since 1952.
Prince Philip was married to Queen Elizabeth II and the pair had four children together – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford expressed his sadness at the news and offered condolences to The Queen and the Royal Family on behalf of the Welsh Government.
Mr Drakeford said: “It is with sadness that we mourn the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Throughout his long and distinguished life, he served the crown with selfless devotion and generosity of spirit.
"We offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, his children and their families on this sad occasion.
"He will be missed by the many organisations that he supported as patron or president over many decades of service”.
