NFU’s Back British Farming Day, held today, seeks to drive greater support for the Welsh and British farming sector by promoting farm produce.

The National Farmers Union will today launch a new report to reinforce that British food is some of the highest quality, safest, and most nutritious food in the world and that the UK has the climate and the natural resources to produce fresh, affordable food for everyone, in every corner of the UK.

Celebrating Back British Farming Day, Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts pays tribute to the hardworking farmers of Dwyfor Meirionnydd.

Ms Roberts said: “Despite the pandemic, farmers in Dwyfor Meirionnydd have continued to play a vital role in feeding the nation.

“Welsh produce like beef and lamb are among the most sustainable and best quality in the world. At such a pivotal time for the agriculture industry in Wales we must all support our farmers and buy local produce.

“The economic and cultural value of Welsh agriculture should not be underestimated. That’s why I’m backing Welsh farming again this year.”

Also honouring Back British Farming Day is Dwyfor Meirionnydd Senedd Member Mabon ap Gwynfor.

Mr ap Gwynfor reiterated his call on the Welsh government to scrap the controversial NVZ regulations.

He said: “Welsh farmers are an integral part of the solution to solving the climate crisis - not the problem.

“The farming-by-calendar approach proposed by the Labour Welsh government will see farmers clearing their slurry stores immediately before and after the closed periods. This risks creating new pollution issues even in areas where there are no problems currently.

“I oppose these regulations not because there is no water quality problem in some parts of Wales – rather that these are impractical regulations. They will cause significant unintended environmental, economic and social consequences, and they must not be rushed through. Plaid Cymru will continue to back Welsh farming and oppose the NVZ regulations.”
