AN ABERYSTWYTH brother and sister might have a bright future in photography after they became the first siblings to win both categories in the annual FfotoAber schools photography competition.
Gwion Hefin, who studies at Ysgol Gymraeg and his older sister, Mari Hefin from Ysgol Penweddig, were both victorious in their respective categories as judges hailed the quality of entrees for this, the fifth year of the competition.
Held in partnership with Aberystwyth Rotary Club and Canolfan Arad Goch, the competition again highlighted the popularity and accessibility of photography with primary and secondary schools students submitting their interpretations of this year’s theme, Belonging, also the theme for next year’s Urdd Eisteddfod competition.
In the primary school category, Hedd James-Morris from Ysgol Syr John Rhys, Ponterwyd, and Miriam Llwyd Davies from Ysgol Talybont shared second place and the third prize went to Mared Ainslie-Rogers of Ysgol Mynach.
Second place in the secondary schools category was awarded to Kiera Ellis from Penglais School, with Glain Llwyd of Ysgol Penweddig securing third place.
Catrin Davies of FfotoAber said the judges, Mike Price of the Rotary Club, Mari Rhian Owen from Arad Goch and photographer Keith Morris certainly had their work cut out.
She said: “Looking at the winners this year I suspect that photography is in the genes in some families in the area. The interpretation of the theme is naturally so different for each competitor, but it is great to see the variety of images.
“As well as being recognised by the judges, it is an extra reward that the winning photos and those highly commended can be exhibited in a wonderful, accessible space like Arad Goch. I’d encourage anyone to call in over next few weeks to have a look.”
Geraint Thomas, of Aberystwyth Rotary Club’s youth committee, said: “Photography is so accessible, no matter what your age, and I have loved seeing the way these competitors have interpreted the theme. Working in partnership with FfotoAber and Arad Goch allows us to develop the competition year on year, and ensure the young people’s work is seen by a wider audience.”
Jeremy Turner, artistic director at Arad Goch welcomes the return of the exhibition, and said: “Our many supporters are aware of the various community activities that happen here, reflecting the cultural vibrancy of Aberystwyth.
“This photography exhibition fits perfectly with our continuous aspirations and I would encourage anyone to come in to see the photographs on show.
“While you’re here you can also hear more about our work.”
The other competition held by FfotoAber was the photomarathon, which was held on Saturday, 24 October.
