STUDENTS at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor are celebrating after scooping a top engineering award.

Trainee mechanical engineers based at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s CamDA centre, in Dolgellau, have won a coveted Engineering Education Scheme Wales/STEM Cymru award at the prestigious Big Bang Fair in Llandudno which has now become an annual event organised by EESW/STEM Cymru.

Connor Barratt, Tobias Bavin, John Roberts and Matthew Williams won the prize for Best Use of Mechanical Principles sponsored by IMechE.

They received a cash prize of £500 to share and a gyroscope for the Engineering Department.

The team worked on the project with the company First Hydro, who set the project brief. They designed and built a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of inspecting the Afon-y-Bala culvert.

The project brief was to design and construct a water resistant ROV capable of inspecting valves located within the culvert remotely.

The culvert plays an important role in managing the water level in Llyn Peris during periods of heavy rain and high natural run-off.
