A FURTHER 11 jobs will be lost at Aberystwyth University on top of 40 already shed because not enough money has been saved.
University staff have been warned that as part of a £6m savings target for this year, more jobs will have to be lost in five departments - Theatre, TV and Film Studies; Education; IBERS; Information Services; and Planning.
The university said it was hoped that compulsory redundancies could be avoided.
Forty posts have already been cut through the university’s voluntary severance or early retirement schemes and empty properties are being sold or rented out but the level of savings needed has still not been achieved.
A university spokesperson said: “As an ambitious and forward-looking university, we have made a commitment to reduce our deficit while continuing to invest in areas of growth and maintaining our standards of excellence in teaching quality, research and the student experience.
“In April 2017, we said we needed to make savings of £6m in 2017/18 and £5.4m in 2018/19. We are making progress towards these targets.
“To date, there has been a net reduction of 40 posts as a result of voluntary severance or early retirement, and this scheme remains open.
“We have also identified a number of properties no longer needed for teaching, research or other use and which we will now be offering for sale or rent on the open market. However, we still need to reduce our staffing costs further."
